Anchor Center for Blind Children, a private nonprofit organization, is seeking a Teacher of the Visually Impaired (TVI) to serve as a key member of the Center’s highly collaborative transdisciplinary team. Working in partnership with parents and caregivers, the TVI works to meet the educational goals of children, age birth to five, served by Anchor Center.


  • Additionally, the TVI provides the Center’s therapists and teachers assistants with basic knowledge and expertise specific to young children with visual impairments in areas of vision, orientation and mobility, and literacy.
  • This is a fulltime professional, salaried position, within a traditional school-year calendar.
  • The ideal candidate has certification or a degree in education of students with visual impairments.
  • Candidates in the of process obtaining their TVI certificate will be considered provided s/he has completed her/his BA or MA degree and/or is certified in Early Childhood Education or Special Education.
  • A minimum of two years experience teaching and working with children birth through five years with vision impairment or blindness is strongly preferred. Additional preferred knowledge, skills and abilities include:
  • ACVREP certification in Orientation and Mobility.
  • Certification in Early Childhood Special Education or Early Childhood Education. • Braille certification.
  • Knowledge of young children with medical fragility and sensory needs desired.
  • Experience providing parent education and support for families.
  • Ability to work as an integral member of a team as well as independently.
  • Familiarity (or) experience with assessment tools that address the unique needs of young children with blindness or visual impairments.

The Essential Duties and Responsibilities of the TVI include:

  • Assessing functional vision and developmental skills of children.
  • Participating in the development of educational plans.
  • Providing early intervention and instruction in both classroom and home-based settings.
  • Providing support and resources to families/caregivers of the children served.
  • Supporting student transition to other settings, including public preschool.
  • Consulting and collaborating with early interventionists in medical and community-based settings.
  • Maintaining records, preparing reports and attending IFSP/IEP meetings.
  • Educating about young children with visual impairments to the community.

Salary: $52,000 annual.
Assistance with relocation expenses for out-of-state candidates will be considered.
